Dr. Sobel has been in private practice in General Adult Psychiatry and Pain Medicine in center city Philadelphia since 1988. Prior to that he served as Unit Director of the open psychiatry inpatient unit at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he is still on staff. A Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Jefferson Medical College, he continues to be an in-demand supervisor of psychiatric residents, who have awarded him their annual teaching award. He recently was honored by his peers in the Philadelphia Psychiatric Society, who named him as Practitioner of the Year in 2013.

Those dealing with mental illness and chronic pain face daunting, often lonely struggles. Recovery from this requires a collaborative, mutually-respectful doctor-patient relationship. I have structured my practice with the intent of helping create an environment in which this can take place.
